Chelsea Give Defender Three Weeks Ultimatum to Agree New Deal

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is running out of time to secure a new long-term contract with the Blues, reports The Sun. The 6ft 4in centre-back turns 30 in three weeks on December 19th, with the West London club having a policy of only offering one-year deals to players over that age.

The England international’s current deal at Stamford Bridge – which currently earns him £100,000-a-week, as per the aforementioned source – is due to expire at the end of next season.

According to The Sun, Cahill is ‘locked in talks’ as he is keen to extend his stay with the Blues for as long as possible. Like many Chelsea players, Cahill has struggled for form this season, with Jose Mourinho’s side having endured a torturous start to the campaign.

However, Cahill’s performances last season – as well as his displays in an England shirt – suggest that he is a player who is worth persisting with.

Cahill, who started his career at Aston Villa, joined Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers in January 2012.
