Breaking News - No Survivors on Russian Airliner KGL9268 That Got Crashed

A Russian airliner has crashed in central Sinai killing all 224 people on board, Egyptian officials have said. The Airbus A-321 had just left the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, bound for the Russian city of St Petersburg.

Wreckage was found in the Hasana area and bodies removed, along with the plane's "black box". An official described a "tragic scene" with bodies of victims still strapped to seats.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced Sunday a day of mourning. He has ordered an official investigation into the crash, and for rescue teams to be sent to the crash site.

Egyptian officials said all the passengers were Russian. A commission headed by Transport Minister Maksim Sokolov is to leave for Egypt on Saturday afternoon. A criminal case has also been opened against the airline, Kogalymavia, for "violation of rules of flight and preparation for them", Russia's Ria news agency reported.

Egyptian Prime Minister Confirms Russian Plane Crashed in Sinai, 224 Aboard

Egyptian Prime Minister Sharif Ismail has confirmed the crash of a Russian passenger plane with 224 people aboard, less than a half hour after the plane took off from the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

Egyptian officials say the Airbus A-321, Kogalymavia Flight 9268, was a chartered aircraft carrying 217 passengers, including 17 children, along with seven crew members. The crash site has been spotted and a rescue operation is under way. It is not clear if there were any survivors.

The prime minister's office says he has scheduled an emergency meeting with government and security officials, while the Russian Foreign Ministry says on its Facebook page that it is monitoring the situation.

Obama Removes Burundi from Trade Program

U.S. President Barack Obama says he plans to remove Burundi from a U.S. trade preference program because of a worsening crackdown on the political opposition there, after Burundi's president took a controversial third term in office.

In a letter to Congress Friday, Obama said the violence against Burundi's opposition includes "assassinations, extra-judicial killings, arbitrary arrests and torture."

The measure to drop Burundi from the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) will take effect on January 1. AGOA allows eligible African countries to import certain products without paying any duties, helping the countries to boost exports.

Obama said the violence in Burundi "worsened significantly during the election campaign that returned President [Pierre] Nkurunziza to power earlier this year."

The decision by Nkurunziza to run for a third term sparked anger from many Burundians who said he was violating the constitution and the Arusha Accord that ended the country's 13-year civil war.

Clashes between police and protesters and fear of more unrest prompted nearly 200,000 Burundians to flee the country, with most going to Tanzania or Rwanda.

New Treatment Makes Cancer Cells Glow

A new substance that makes cancer cells glow could make cancer surgeries much more effective, according to a new study.

Writing in the journal Chemistry of Materials, researchers at Oregon State University say silicon naphthalocyanine makes cancer cells glow in near-infrared light and “creates heat and reactive oxygen species within any remaining cancer cells, killing them.”

“This system that can make cancer cells glow is like giving the surgeon an extra pair of eyes,” said Olena Taratula, a research assistant professor in the Oregon State University/Oregon Health & Science University College of Pharmacy, and lead author on the published study. “And the compound we’re working with now is inexpensive and appears effective at killing any cancer cells that remain.”

Once injected, the substance was completely absorbed by tumors within 24 hours and had disappeared from the rest of the body.

On Instagram, he wrote that he "chose to end the show as the people in the front row would not listen.'' Videos posted on social media show a visibly irritated Bieber saying "Gimme me a second. Guys, I am done. I am not gonna do the show.''

The 21-year-old singer removed his cap and headset as he walked off the stage at Oslo's Chateau Neuf concert hall before some 1,000 screaming fans.

Chelsea Manager, Mourinho Cannot Guarantee Top-four Finish

Following a woeful start to the season so far, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted he cannot guarantee the club Champions League football next term. Mourihno said this in his custom prematch conference this afternoon

A League Cup defeat to Stoke City midweek has only increased the pressure on the former Real Madrid man, with Chelsea rooted in the bottom half of the table. And with another tough clash against Liverpool, on the horizon, Mourinho admitted that a top-four finish could be out of reach.

“I cannot promise it," he told reporters during a tetchy press conference on Friday.

Asked whether Jurgen Klopp's definition of himself raised a laugh, Mourinho was similarly blunt: "Why should I laugh?"

Here's Why You Should NEVER Refrigerate Your Bread

The truth is, if you want to keep your bread fresher for longer, wrapping it in plastic and storing it in the fridge is the worst thing you can do.

It sounds counter-intuitive (no pun intended), seeing as how refrigerators were invented to help us preserve the freshness of food. So to understand why, Serious Eats broke it down into the science of "retrogradation and recrystallization of starch," a complicated way of saying that during a bread's lifetime (which begins when a bread cools after being heated during baking), its starches (which were rearranged when baked) will regroup back to their original, crystallized state. Thus, your bread becomes hard, or stale.

Former Chelsea's Team Doctor Carneiro Tables Case Against Chelsea

Lawyers for former Chelsea team doctor Eva Carneiro have served notice on the club that she intends to seek a claim for constructive dismissal, according to media reports on Thursday. Several British media outlets said that legal papers were served on the London club this week, which will lead to an employment tribunal unless an out-of-court settlement can be reached.

British employment tribunals are held in public, which could have the potential to embarrass Chelsea, who are currently floundering in 15th place in the Premier League table.

Carneiro left Chelsea after being removed from first-team duties by manager Jose Mourinho, who had rebuked her and physiotherapist Jon Fearn for running onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard during his side's 2-2 draw with Swansea City on the season's opening day, which temporarily left Chelsea with nine players.

Married Patients Do Better After Heart Surgery

Being married reduces mortality after heart surgery, according to a new study. Writing in the journal JAMA Surgery, researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that patients who are divorced, separated or widowed had around a 40 percent higher risk of dying or “developing a new functional disability” within the first two years after heart surgery than patients who were married.

“While it has been established that the chances of survival following major surgery may be better among married versus unmarried persons, it is not known how marriage ‘marries’ with actual postoperative function,” said study co-author Doctor Mark Neuman.

“Understanding this may be useful for identifying patients who may be in need of additional support and targeted interventions aimed at improving functional recovery.”

5,000 North Koreans Died of Tuberculosis in North Korea Last Year - WHO

About 5,000 North Koreans died of tuberculosis last year according to a report released by the World Health Organization (WHO). The disease caused 20 deaths per 100,000 tuberculosis patients in North Korea in 2014, a rate more than five times that of neighboring South Korea, according to WHO's Global Tuberculosis Report 2015.

Despite the high rate, Philippe Glaziou, WHO’s senior epidemiologist, told VOA the number of deaths resulting from tuberculosis in North Korea is “possibly declining.”

“About 5,000 people died of TB in the year of 2014. In the previous year, the number was about 6,000,” said Glaziou.

The report estimated there were nearly 110,000 tuberculosis patients in the communist country in 2014. That is 442 per 100,000 people, a slight increase from the previous year. In Asia, North Korea has the second highest number of tuberculosis patients after East Timor.

BVN UPDATE - Banks to Deactivate Unregistered Accounts as Deadline Expires Friday

Bank customers that are unable to obtain their bank verification numbers (BVNs) before the close of business this Friday would not be able to operate such accounts as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ruled out another extension of the deadline, which expires this Friday.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in collaboration with the Bankers’ Committee had introduced the BVN on February 14, 2014. The initiative was aimed at ensuring unique identity for all bank customers and other users of financial services in the country by the use of the customers’ biometrics as means of identification.

At the expiration of the initial estimated 18 months after the launch, a good number of bank customers were reluctant in registering, which led to commotion and stampede in banking halls across the country towards the end of the previous deadline. That confusion necessitated the call for the extension of the registration dateline by four months to October 31.

Rihanna Lands 'Big Part' in Sci-fi Flick Valérian and The City of a Thousand Planets

Rihanna is ready to take on another movie. The entertainer’s latest project has been announced, and she’ll be headed back in front of the camera to take on a role in the upcoming sci-fi flick Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The film’s director, Luc Bessen, shared the news on Instagram Thursday.

Valérian, which is set to star Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, and Dane DeHaan, is based on French comic book series that has been collected in a set of graphic novels. The series follows Valérian, a time-traveling agent, and his partner, Laureline, as they explore a galactic empire. Rihanna’s specific role hasn’t been announced yet, but Bessen teased that it will be a “big part.”

Although best known as a singer, Rihanna has previously acted in a variety of films. She made her acting debut as herself in 2006’s Bring It On: All or Nothing before later taking on bigger roles in 2012’s Battleship and 2013’s This Is the End. She also tried her hand at voice-acting in the animated film Home, released earlier this year.

China's Naval Commander Warns US Over Provocative Acts

China's naval commander has warned his US counterpart against "dangerous and provocative acts", days after a US warship sailed close to contested islands in the South China Sea. Admiral Wu Shengli said in a video conference that there was a risk that such minor incidents could spark war, according to a Navy statement.

The US said the talks were productive and that dialogue would be maintained. China's claims in the South China Sea are contested by its Asian neighbours. On Thursday, an international arbitration panel ruled that it is entitled to hear a case brought by the Philippines in its territorial dispute with China, involving one group of islands in the South China Sea.

European Migrant Crisis Continues as 22 Drown off Greek Islands

At least 22 migrants - many of them children - have drowned trying to reach Kalymnos and Rhodes from Turkey, in the second major boat tragedy off Greek islands this week. Greek officials said 19 people died and 138 were rescued near Kalymnos. Three others died off Rhodes and three were missing. Six were rescued there.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said he felt "shame" over "the inability of Europe to deal effectively with this human drama". Speaking in parliament, the left-wing Syriza leader condemned the "level of debate at a senior level, where one is passing the buck to the other" in the EU.

"Crocodile tears are being shed for the dead children on the shores of the Aegean, because dead children always arouse sorrow, but what about the children that are alive who come in thousands and are packed on the refugee trail? Nobody cares for them," Mr Tsipras added.

Apart From Referee and Journalist Mourihno is Nice to Everyone - Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has poked some friendly fun at opposite number Jose Mourinho ahead of Liverpool's clash with Chelsea, insisting the Blues boss is a nice guy... as long as you're not a football official. The German manager goes up against under-pressure Mourinho on Saturday with his new team, having left Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season.

Klopp, however, backed the Chelsea boss to pull out of the slump, while admitting he is not to everyone's taste. "I'm full of respect for his work. If you're not a referee or a journalist he can be a nice guy," he joked to reporters in Friday's press conference. During the game we are both emotional but we are professionals, everything is fine between us.

Drama as A-Court Panel Disagree Over Saraki’s Trial

The propriety of the 13-count criminal charge against the Senate President, Dr. Olubukola Saraki has created a sharp division among Appeal Court Justices. Whereas Justice Moore Adumein dismissed the appeal that was lodged by Saraki as lacking in merit, another member of the panel, Justice ‎ J.E. Ekanem upheld the appeal, declaring the charge before the CCT as incompetent.

Justice Ekanem specifically quashed the charge and discharged Saraki on the basis that the Deputy Director at the Ministry of Justice, M. M. S. Hassan who signed the charge, did not specify who authorised him to initiate the ‎criminal proceeding. “A look at the charge showed that Mr. Hassan instituted the action pursuant to section 24 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, 2004 which permits only the Attorney General of the Federation to initiate criminal proceedings”.

Saudi Bogger Raif Badawi Awarded Sakharov Human Rights Prize

Saudi blogger Raif Badawi, whose flogging sentence caused an outcry, has been awarded the European Parliament's Sakharov human rights prize. Parliament President Martin Schulz urged Saudi King Salman "to free him, so he can accept the prize". Mr Badawi was sentenced to 10 years in jail and 1,000 lashes in Saudi Arabia for "insulting Islam".

Earlier this month he also won the Pen Pinter Prize for championing free speech. The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded by the European Parliament since 1988 to individuals or organisations for their contribution to the fight for human rights and democracy. Finally! China Decides to End One-child Policy

China has decided to end its decades-long one-child policy, the state-run Xinhua news agency reports. Couples will now be allowed to have two children, it said, citing a statement from the Communist Party. The controversial policy was introduced nationally in 1979, to slow the population growth rate.

It is estimated to have prevented about 400 million births. However concerns at China's ageing population led to pressure for change. Couples who violated the one-child policy faced a variety of punishments, from fines and the loss of employment to forced abortions. Over time, the policy has been relaxed in some provinces, as demographers and sociologists raised concerns about rising social costs and falling worker numbers.

Chelsea can still win Premier League title - Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas remains confident Chelsea can still successfully defend their Premier League title ahead of Liverpool's visit on Saturday. The reigning champions have endured a dismal start to the season, and sit 15th in the table with just 11 points from 10 games. Jose Mourinho's men trail joint leaders Manchester City and Arsenal 11 points, yet Fabregas is refusing to throw in the towel just yet and is targeting a response against Jurgen Klopp's men.

Guantanamo Prisoner from Mauritania Returns Home After 13 Years

The Pentagon says another prisoner has been released from the detention center on the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A Pentagon statement Thursday said Ahmed Abdel Aziz, 45, has been sent back to his native Mauritania after 13 years in custody at Guantanamo. He is the 14th prisoner released this year amid a continuing standoff between President Barack Obama and Congress over Obama’s attempt to close the detention center.

"The United States is grateful to the Government of Mauritania for its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility," the Pentagon said. "The United States coordinated with the Government of Mauritania to ensure this transfer took place consistent with appropriate security and humane treatment measures."

Video Game Helps Manage ADHD, Its Maker Says

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder show signs of improvement after playing a video game for 30 minutes a day rather than taking a pill, the U.S. company developing the treatment said Wednesday. Diagnoses of ADHD have risen in recent decades; some 9.5 percent of children aged 3-17 in the United States had the condition in 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Children in the pilot study — 80 aged between 8 and 12, half of whom had ADHD — showed improved working memory and levels of attention, and some parent ratings of symptoms also rose, according to the results presented at the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's 62nd annual meeting. The company, Akili Interactive Labs, said it would now "move full steam ahead" into a full randomized trial that, if successful, would support a filing with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

More Zimbabwean Men Get Circumcised to Reduce HIV Risk

Zimbabwe is one of the countries hardest hit by the AIDS epidemic. For the past couple of years, the government has been urging men to get circumcised, a procedure that lowers the risk of getting infected with the HIV virus. Now, officials are pushing the newly-introduced ring method that makes the procedure easier.

These men have just been circumcised using the ring method. They watch a football match as others undergo the procedure in a nearby tent. The technique involves inserting a plastic ring inside the foreskin. A rubber ring is placed on the outside. The ring blocks bloodflow to the foreskin and in a few days, both the ring and the foreskin can be removed. In 2009, the government set the target to have 1.3 million men circumcised by 2017 to slow the spread of HIV.

Pogba Could Become a Barcelona's Player - Raiola

The French playmaker was linked to the Spanish giant through out the summer and the midfield sensation has again been linked with a move to the Spanish champions, this time by his agent, who says Pogba would cost over £70 million. Paul Pogba’s agent sees no reason why the midfielder couldn’t join Barcelona next summer but admits Juventus would demand a huge fee.

Mino Raiola, who oversees the contract negotiations of the France international, reopened speculation that Pogba could be on his way to La Liga in the future but has ruled out a potential January transfer switch. Speaking to Radio Montecarlo, the 47-year-old representative believes a move is being considered by Luis Enrique.

Barcelona's right back, Douglas is set to Barcelona's El Clasico fixture against Real Madrid after being sidelined for up to two months with a bone fracture in his right foot. Ivory Coast Revels in Ouattara's Landslide Election Victory

Ivorian president Alassane Ouattara has won a second term in office. He received 83 percent of votes Sunday according to official results announced overnight. His win doesn't come as a surprise and Ivorians are reveling in the calm. Cars honking, people rushing to work, vendors selling coffee by the side of the road -- the streets of Abidjan look just like any other day just a few hours after results were announced.

And this simple fact is for Tonian Amalaman a reason to rejoice. He said, "it doesn't matter who won. I am happy to be able to walk down the street and see that there is no violence."

A nearby opposition supporter agreed. "I am not a supporter of Ouattara," she said. "But I must admit that I'm happy because I was fearing the announcement of the result. I didn't want any violence. But everything went well, and I hope it will last because you need peace if you want a country to develop. President Ouattara won a landslide victory. Second place candidate, Pascal Affi N'Guessan, got just nine percent of the vote.

No End in Sight for South Africa Student Protests

Two weeks after South African students launched protests over proposed university fee hikes — and just days after winning a major concession from the president — the demonstrations that rocked South Africa show no signs of stopping. Recent protests have not seen the intensity of those last week, which prompted clashes with police. Cape Town officers arrested 29 students after a heated protest, while Pretoria police fired tear gas on protesters who attempted to force their way into negotiations between students and elected officials.

Students at Johannesburg’s University of the Witwatersrand — site of the first protests that launched this national phenomenon — said Monday they had no intention of stopping until they reached their greater goal of economic equality. By Tuesday the flame had quite literally continued to burn as university officials extinguished several campus fires started “deliberately and simultaneously.” The university's student council says it want leaders to address issues like free education, institutional autonomy and racism.

He stated that his administration remains fully committed to maintaining macro-economic stability and improving investor confidence in Nigeria.

The journey into car manufacturing in the university started last year, when a group of five students from Department of Mechanical Engineering of the university produced a Formula 1 car called AutoZIK. The seven students include Ezeigwe Chitoo, Obinani Victor, Ezeanolue Ifeanyi, Okoro Chinaza, Ominigbo Fidelis, Nwobodo Nnamdi and Ogbu Thaddeus. They were supervised by the Head of the department, Dr. C.H. Achebe. South East Voice learned that the group, which is known as ‘AUTOZIK II,’ spent over five months constructing the mini bus for shuttles within and around the university with locally sourced materials.

Like the popular saying, “What a man can do, a woman can do even better,” the conspicuous presence of a female, ‘Okoro Chinaza’ in the team spoke volumes. On how she was able to surmount the challenges as the only female in the midst of her male counterparts with respect to the stress associated with such herculean tasks, she said: “I had always been in their midst right from my first year in school, so it was not really a big deal.”

The report also classified red meat as 'probably carcinogenic' – one rank below – but added that it had some nutritional benefits. Experts are now urging the public to avoid processed meat where possible and to have a bean salad for lunch rather than a BLT.

Scientists Have Discovered a Gene That Puts Women at Higher Risk of Heart Disease

Scientists have identified a gene that puts women at higher risk of heart disease, an early study suggests. The work showed that women who had a particular version of the BCAR1 gene were more likely than other women to have heart attacks and strokes. In contrast, men who had the gene were not at increased risk. Researchers say this adds to mounting evidence that there are differences in how men and women experience heart disease.

Thicker arteries
In the study, published in the journal, Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics, researchers from University College London pooled data from five European research projects, involving nearly 4,000 men and women. Comparing their genes, the health of their blood vessels and the thickness of key arteries, scientists pinpointed a version of a gene that was linked to a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes and diseased blood vessels in women. Though they still have work to do to fully understand the link, researchers believe the gene - when combined with a woman's naturally occurring oestrogen - could lead to an increased risk of heart disease.

Processed Meats Leads to Cancer - WHO

Processed meats - such as bacon, sausages and ham - do cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Its report said 50g of processed meat a day - less than two slices of bacon - increased the chance of developing colorectal cancer by 18%. Meanwhile, it said red meats were "probably carcinogenic" but there was limited evidence. WHO did stress that meat also had health benefits.  Cancer Research UK said this was a reason to cut down rather than give up red and processed meats. And added that an occasional bacon sandwich would do little harm.

What is processed meat?
Processed meat has been modified to either extend its shelf life or change the taste and the main methods are smoking, curing, or adding salt or preservatives. Simply putting beef through a mincer does not mean the resulting mince is "processed" unless it is modified further. Processed meat includes bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, corned beef, beef jerky and ham as well as canned meat and meat-based sauces.  It is the chemicals involved in the processing which could be increasing the risk of cancer. High temperature cooking, such as on a barbeque, can also create carcinogenic chemicals.

S'Court Dismisses Wike's Appeal Challenging Relocation of Tribunal to Abuja

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the decision of the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, in relocating the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal to Abuja on grounds of alleged  insecurity in Rivers State. The tribunal, which sat in Abuja, had last Saturday nullified the April 11 governorship election that produced Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) as governor  and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election within 90 days. At the preliminary stage, Wike had challenged the tribunal's jurisdiction to sit outside Rivers State. The tribunal dismissed his objection and a further appeal to the Court of Appeal was also dismissed.

He consequently appealed t‎o the Supreme Court. Ruling on the appeal yesterday, a full panel of the apex court unanimously dismissed the appeal for lacking in merit. Reading the lead judgement, Justice Amiru Sanusi held that evidence abound that there were security challenges prevailing in Rivers state as at the time the panel was constituted. He further held that the court could not  be bound by its earlier  decision in Ibori's case which was cited by the appellant.
