TAN Seeks Support of UN Over Feb. Election

Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) has sought the cooperation of the United Nations (UN) for the fast approaching 2015 general election, saying the cooperation of the world’s apex body is seriously needed if the country must conduct credible polls.

In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon and signed by its national coordinator, Mr. Patrick Ifeanyi Uba, TAN, a frontline group backing the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan asked the global body to show commitment to the election to further ensure the credibility of the exercise.

He said, “President Goodluck Jonathan is a highly reputable democrat who keeps no political prisoners and protects all freedoms for all Nigerians. He signed the Freedom of Information Act (FoI) to encourage greater transparency, acceptability and open government.

“Despite the challenges of insurgency in the North-east of Nigeria, he continues to protect the freedom of speech, freedom of religion and right to free worship, freedom of association and much more. President Jonathan has shown himself to be a liberal and transformational leader.

“President Jonathan has sustainably changed and transformed the economy of Nigeria culminating in its ranking as the number one economic and investment destination in Africa”, he further stated in the letter.

Meanwhile, TAN has distributed humanitarian relief materials to all internally displaced persons’ camp in different places across the country including Bauchi, Maiduguri, Yobe, Abuja, Adamawa, etc.

According to the group, this is part of its humanitarian mission and corporate social responsibility in solidarity with President Jonathan.

The adviser to the group’s national coordinator, Mr. Christian Udechukwu said beneficiaries of the humanitarian relief materials were grateful for the compassion, goodwill and concern which President Jonathan had demonstrated in reaching out to them.

He said, “It is expected that they would be safely returned to their homes when peace is restored soon. TAN has visited many military hospitals and comforted our troops’ families with relief materials to show support for our soldiers, and boosting the morale of our heroic men and women in the armed forces and security agencies”.
