Ray Wilkins expressed his view on John Terry's future under the newly appointed Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte and emphasized that he will want to keep John Terry at the club.
The premier league defending champions announced on Monday that current Italy head coach Conte will take over the reins from interim first-team coach Guus Hiddink immediately after the European Championship in France this summer.
Terry’s 21-year association with the west London club remains unclear, with the former England captain’s contract set to expire at the end of the season. He is yet to be offered an extended deal to stay on at the Premier League club.
The 35-year-old remains a mainstay of the Blues’ defence, having featured in 22 league matches this term, however, he looks to be heading for the exit door unless a new deal can be agreed with the club.
Conte enjoyed managerial success with Italian side Juventus, leading the Serie A giants to three consecutive league titles before he was appointed the Italya national team boss.
Ahead of the Italian's first venture into English football, Wilkins - who took temporary control of Chelsea in 2009 following Luiz Felipe Scolari’s sacking - has said that Conte will look to lean on the experience of the Blues skipper.
“John Terry is an exceptional player and he will be for a couple of years, whether he is at Chelsea or elsewhere,” Wilkins told Sky Sports.
“Antonio will want his experience and will want to pick his brains about what he is coming into.”
Wilkins, currently out of employment following a short-term spell as Aston Villa assistant manager, is confident the former midfielder will hit the ground running at his new club.
“He’s done exceptionally well at Juventus so there is no reason to suggest he won’t do well at Chelsea,” he added.
