CAF President Issa Hayatou has expressed the shock at the death of Uganda goalie Abel Dhaira, who passed away on Sunday, 27 March 2016 in Iceland after losing a battle against cancer.
“On behalf of the CAF Executive Committee, the entire African football family and in my personal name, we would like to convey to the family of the deceased, to his teammates of the national team, and to the Uganda Football family our deepest condolences and sympathy following his death.
“May God bless his soul,” CAF President Hayatou said in a letter dated 6 April 2016 and addressed to president of Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), Moses Magogo.
Dhaira, 28, was on the books of Icelandic side, ÍB Vestmannaeyjar prior to his death.
Having made his national team in 2009, he helped the Cranes to win the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in 2012 on home soil. He also had stints with local sides Express and URA, as well as AS Vita of DR Congo and Tanzania’s Simba.
He was laid to rest on Wednesday, 6 April 2016 in Mayuge in the Eastern part of Uganda.
