Barnes Will Not Face FA Action Over Matic Horror Tackle

The Burnley attacker launched into a rash challenge on the Chelsea midfielder, who reacted furiously and was sent off, but he will not face any retrospective punishment. Burnley attacker Ashley Barnes will not face any further action for his horror tackle on Nemanja Matic in Saturday's Premier League clash with Chelsea.

The 25-year-old's rash challenge, described as "criminal" by Jose Mourinho, provoked a heated reaction from the Serbian midfielder, who was sent off, but the Football Association have confirmed that, as the referee saw the tackle, no further action will be taken.

The FA tweeted: "In the vast majority of challenges for the ball, no retrospective action is taken as the incident has been seen by the match officials.

"Retrospective action introduced as deterrent for ‘off the ball incidents’ [e.g. kicks, stamps etc.] committed out of sight of officials.

"Whole game in agreement that, in vast majority of cases, match officials are best-placed to deal with incidents to avoid re-refereeing.

"In line with this rationale, FA confirm no further action in relation to Ashley Barnes as incident was seen by the officials."

Matic, however, has been handed a three-match ban after shoving Barnes to the ground, meaning he will miss next week's League Cup final clash with Tottenham, as well as games against West Ham and Southampton. (Goal)
