Markovic Given Four-game Ban for Red Card Against Basel

The winger will be forced to sit out both of the Reds' upcoming Europa League ties against Besiktas as well as the last 16 ties should Brendan Rodgers' men progress.

Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic has been handed a four-game ban for violent conduct after he was sent off during the Reds' 1-1 draw with Basel in the Champions League in December.

The 20-year-old came on as a substitute in the game at half-time but was given his marching orders after clashing with Behrang Safari with an outstretched arm, although minimal contact was made.

Speaking after the game manager Brendan Rodgers described the incident as a "really, really poor decision" and insisted that Markovic should not have been dismissed.

The result capped a disappointing night for the Reds who dropped out of the Champions League and into the Europa League where they were drawn to face Besiktas.

However, the ban means Markovic will be forced to sit out of both of Liverpool's upcoming ties against the Turkish side as well as the last 16 fixtures, should the Reds progress.
