ROBBERY: Robbers Make Away With Bullion Van, Kill 1

Rampaging armed robbers in Delta communities, on Monday in Umunede community near Asaba, raided a bullion van conveying money running into millions of naira after close to two hours of gun battle with policemen where one person was killed and several others injured before they ran away with the money unhurt.
Eyewitness said the armed robbers ambushed the driver of the van along the Asaba-Benin Expressway after shooting sporadically to scare motorists and passersby away.

It was reliably gathered that the armed robbers escaped with their car after killing a 12-year-old boy and injuring the policemen with the bullion van who could not withstand their superior power.

Sources said there have been frequent robbery incidents in Umunede community especially at night fall where heavy duty vehicles’ drivers stop-over to take some rest before they continue their journey.

In what appeared to be a scene from a movie, the eyewitness further said that the robbers in a commando style ordered travellers to frog jump while the gun battle with the police lasted.

As it were, the 12 year- old- boy who was killed was said to have been hit by the robbers’ stray bullets when they fired non-stop at the van that left everybody around the incident to run for their dear lives.

But the police public relations officer, Celestina Kalu who confirmed the robbery incident, said the police would do everything possible to bring them to book, adding that no policeman was injured during the attack.
