National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun: Buhari Will Not Probe Past Corrupt Leaders

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that its presidential candidate, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, will not immediately launch into probes of past leaders, politicians and officials who have stolen from the country when elected president, insofar as they repent.

Making this known in Benin on Monday, the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun said Buhari will concentrate primarily on solving Nigeria’s many problems left behind by past leaders.

“The first moments of a Buhari presidency will be on the future,” Oyegun said, adding: “His message will be clear: whatever you did before that was detrimental to the people of this country, please stop it, change has come.”

He, however, accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of blasphemy, following comments from the presidency describing President Goodluck Jonathan as Jesus Christ.

Oyegun said that the perception that a Buhari presidency would send many Nigerians to jail, amounted to blackmail being masterminded by the PDP leadership, stressing that only those who may not want to change their ways would have him to contend with.

Oyegun said while Buhari would be willing to give officials who stole in the past a chance to mend their ways, he will come down hard on those bent on continuing with corruption.

“The only people I think should fear the Buhari presidency are those who do not want change. Those who want to continue with business as usual are those who want to continue to profit from the level of corruption in the society,” Oyegun said.

“We will have no apologies for people like that. But it is clear that from the Buhari perspective and that of the APC, the future of the people of this country is too important for us to spend valuable time trying to dig into the past,” he said.

He said those who failed to change would be the ones to face the music.

“It is time for change and anybody who decides that he does not want to be part of change and wants business as usual that is his choice,” he said.

Buhari, in an interview with THISDAY just before the APC convention, had said he would not probe past corrupt leaders and would draw a line on past transgressions.

He had said his primary focus would be on moving the country forward and strengthening the judiciary, but would take on leaders who continue to engage in corrupt practices during his presidency through diligent prosecution so that ongoing cases are wrapped up speedily.
