Fashola: Why There Must Be Change of National Government in 2015

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has advanced reasons why change of leadership is expedient at the national level, saying: “Nigeria is too important both globally and continentally to be left in the hands of those who play politics with the lives of her citizens.”
Fashola’s statement is coming on the heels of Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State’s call on Nigerians to vote against the All Progressives Congress in the 2015 elections “to prevent the country from sliding into dictatorship.”

Addressing the quality gatherings of members of the Yoruba Tennis Club and their Island Club counterparts at their respective club houses in Lagos, Fashola said the national government, formed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had failed to provide its most important responsibility which, according to him, is the security of life and property of citizens and protection of the territorial integrity of the nation.

The governor, who noted that Nigerians handed over a whole country to the ruling party in 2011, expressed regrets that the same party is now returning to Nigerians to ask for another leadership mandate with only part of the country, having lost some parts to insurgents.

Noting that the party has reneged in its primary duty to secure the territorial integrity of Nigeria, the governor warned: “They are returning now to ask for our votes with only a part of the country that we gave them because some parts of the country have been lost to people we didn’t elect. So, in that most important responsibility, they have dropped the ball. That is the alternative that is being offered you in Lagos. The choice is yours.”

Fashola, who expressed dismay that the party had politicized everything, noted that nothing was too much for the party to sloganize about, recalling the way the national government played politics with the very sensitive issue of the more than 200 abducted secondary school girls in Chibok in Borno State.

The governor also recalled that the PDP-controlled federal government has also orchestrated about how it made the country “the biggest economy in Africa”, wondering why smaller economies could provide electricity for their people while the self-acclaimed “biggest economy” could keep her people in darkness.

Conversely, Fashola said the All Progressives Congress controlled Lagos State Government had done well at many fronts including the education, security, power and the financial sector in spite of the very precarious economic and security situation in the country.

In his welcome remarks earlier, Chairman of the Yoruba Tennis Club, Mr.Babaseyi Joseph, regretted the downturn in the nation’s economy and the quality of life of Nigerians saying in spite of the problem of Boko Haram “with no solution in sight”, the nation’s economy has remained fragile as the Naira continues its nosedive.

Also present at the Yoruba Tennis Club were the APC Vice-Presidential candidate, Professor Yemi Osibajo; the Lagos State APC Gubernatorial Candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and Vice Chairman of the Club, Mr. Ayodele Martins.

Mimiko: Nigerians Must Resist APC’s Dictatorial Tendencies …
Meanwhile, Mimiko has urged Nigerians to vote against the APC in the 2015 elections to prevent the country from sliding into dictatorship.

He stated that the PDP would defeat the APC in next year's election, saying the opposition is only deceiving Nigerians.

Mimiko challenged the APC to convince Nigerians on its change slogan, saying its top shots, by their actions, are anti-democratic elements.

Mimiko, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti on Friday when he visited his Ekiti counterpart, Ayo Fayose, wondered why APC wanted Nigeria to change from democracy to dictatorship.

Mimiko also expressed confidence that the PDP would overrun the APC in the South-West in 2015.

"We want APC leaders to explain to Nigerians the change they shout all over. Are they saying the country should change from democracy to dictatorship? This is necessary because their leaders, by their actions, have not shown that they are democratic elements.

"One can see that they are already afraid and panic has set in the way they act now," he said.

On the chances of the PDP in the coming general elections, Mimiko said the party understood the sophistication of elections and the issues involved.

"In the 2011 elections, when President Goodluck Jonathan did not have any governor in the South-West, he won in five of the states. Now that he has more states and subsequent elections in Ondo and Ekiti have shown that the winning streak is continuing; there is not going to be any problem.

"In places like Oyo, Ogun and Lagos, the tide is changing in favour of the PDP. Political jobbers failed to divide us in Lagos and they are panicking already. I can say it without mincing words that the APC is anxious in the South-West and all their lies will not be able to save them from electoral defeat," he said.
