Boko Haram - Troops Invade Sambisa Forest

As part of the steps to rescue the abducted Chibok girls, the Defence Headquarters has confirmed that troops are already in Sambisa Forest the last Boko Haram hideout where the girls are purportedly being held hostage, Hausa service of the BBC reported.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade said that contrary to insinuations, Nigerian soldiers are trained for counter-terrorism.

“What makes it difficult to get to Sambisa Forest? All of it is strategic, gentlemen. We are not even completely out of Sambisa Forest as I am talking to you. We are in Sambisa Forest and we are in places contiguous to it.

“But we have a major plan in mind which I should not be disclosing now. We are not weak, we have the capacity,” he said.

Concerning foreign interventions to rescue the Chibok girls, Olukolade said, “On a diplomatic level, I will say all is well.”

He said Boko Haram had been attacking some towns and villages because the sect was carrying out its “last battle” in desperation.

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees UNHCR is set to train refugees who have fled brutal attacks by insurgents in north-east seeking refuge in Far North Region of Cameroon.

The refugee’s agency said that the plan will also boost the livelihood of the refugees living at the neighbouring countries.

“The refugees will be trained on how to sew, farm and other business activities as the displaced people in north-eastern Nigeria and across borders are in a very dramatic situation.

They fear for their lives and are at this point unable to return to their homes,” UNHCR said.

“The humanitarian community will continue to ensure, with the Governments concerned, that people fleeing for their lives can have unhindered access to asylum and that their rights are respected,” the agency said.
