VANDALISM: Explosion Rocks NNPC Pipeline During Police, Vandals Shootout

An exchange of gunfire between the police and vandals at Arepo area of Ogun State yesterday led to the explosion of NNPC pipeline. Some vandals were said to have been tampering with the pipeline and when they saw the police approaching, opened fire on them.

The policemen were said to have retaliated. It was gathered that the police killed at least three of the vandals.

The South-West National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Spokesperson, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said the number of casualties is still unknown.

Farinloye said pipeline fire fighting experts from the NNPC were moved to the scene immediately after supplies were stopped and they blocked product valves were locked up.

He said Arepo pipeline fire has been put out but fire was still raging at the Imagbon end of Ikorodu pipeline.

A policeman said the explosion was caused by the irresponsible actions of pipeline vandals.

He said, “The vandals were tampering with the pipeline and installing two valves with which they used in siphoning fuel from the ruptured pipes into vehicle tankers parked close to the site. The vandals inserted hose, and pumped fuel. The explosion was caused by the exchange of gunfire between the police and vandals Bullets hit the valves, igniting fire. Police killed at least two of the vandals before the pipeline exploded.” LEADERSHIP
