A police sniffer dog has returned to duty after accidentally inhaling cocaine while searching a car for drugs.

Officers confirmed a canine named Koda was assisting in a traffic stop on a car when the sniffer dog found a small amount of a substance believed to be cocaine.

Police in El Cerrito, California, called the dog and its handler to the scene after suspecting the car might contain illegal drugs.

While searching the car, the poor pooch accidentally inhaled the substance and was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic, where it tested positive for the presence of a stimulant.

Thankfully, the animal was treated and recovered well enough to return to work the next day.

In a statement, police said: "While every effort is made to ensure the safety of the canines, the discovery of suspected drugs can lead to this situation."

Koda, one of two police dogs used in the department, is cross-trained in handler protection, searches and drug detection.

Police also confirmed a 29-year-old suspect, who was in the car where the narcotics were found, was arrested.
