INEC Makes Case For Women In Politics

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday advanced the cause for more women participation in politics. The commission also appealed for adequate projection of women interest by the media.
The national commissioner of the commission, Dame Nne Gladys Nwafor stated this at a one-day workshop on “Gender and Conflict Sensitive Reportage in the electoral process” which held yesterday in Abuja.

She lamented that “womenfolk especially those in politics are not adequately projected in the media”.

She continued “the media as a veritable tool for information has a critical role to play in managing and not magnify conflict and therefore in a position to promote peace and peaceful co-existence”.

She said, “With the current security challenges in Nigeria, the nation look up to the media to help mitigate conflict and propagate peace through their reports and broadcast”.

Also speaking, the deputy director on Gender Division in the commission, Mrs. Blessing Obiidegun stated that professionalism of media reporting is key element during election periods especially as it affects gender and conflicts.
