Borno Mass Abduction: Military Begins Investigation into Claims

The Nigerian military authorities on Friday said that they were yet to verify reports of alleged kidnapping of hundreds of people, especially women and children, in Borno State this week, and assured that investigation was ongoing with serious search for terrorists’ hideouts.
This is coming on the heels of the condemnation of the attack on Gumsuri village by the governments of United States and the United Kingdom.

There have been conflicting media reports mainly from foreign sources alleging that a conflicting number of citizens were kidnapped by terrorists earlier this week in some villages in Borno State, Gumsuri inclusive.

Some reports claimed that it happened on Sunday while others said the raid was conducted on Wednesday, with conflicting figures of over 100 and 200 respectively.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in the statement through their blog, defenceinfo.mil.ng, confirmed that even though some people were killed during the reported attacks, it was yet to verify the cases of abduction.

“Troops are patrolling the general area of Gumsuri in search of terrorists who were said to have attacked the community last weekend. Although it has been confirmed that some people were killed by the terrorists during the attack, the reported abductions as claimed by unidentified sources being quoted in some foreign media is yet to be verified from any credible sources in the community," said the statement.

The military however gave reassuring news that some of the villagers who fled during the attack had started returning to the village, adding that "normal life has also returned to the area".

They also revealed that surveillance and patrol of the area by air and land forces had been stepped up to secure the general area.

“Troops have been ordered to sustain an aggressive patrol of the area and the surrounding communities in order to ensure that terrorists do not have any freedom of action in the area while the counter-terrorism campaign continues," the statement read.
