Elections: School Children Embark On Peaceful Protest

African Children of Peace Club yesterday took to the streets of Lagos to appeal to politicians to embrace peace and allow credible, free and fair election as the children marked this year’s International Children Day of Broadcasting.

The children, who staged the peaceful protest from Ikeja to Alausa, gave out handbills with the inscriptions; “Say no to violence! Free, fair and credible election is all we demand”, “Nigeria belongs to us, please don’t mortgage our future.”

The International Children’s Day of Broadcasting was launched by UNICEF in 1991 in order to encourage broadcasters worldwide to create awareness for children issues.

The students, who were from Timeon Karios Community College, said that it is important for them to join other well-meaning Nigerians to call for peace, saying they did not want crisis in the nation.
According to them, the subsidy protest in 2012 caused the country more problems economically and urged the politicians to allow credible elections.

It will be recalled that African children of peace club was founded on December 17, 2004 in Lagos State. It is one of four school-based peace clubs through which issues affecting the youths are promoted.
