Venezuelan National Football Team Threatens to Quit Unless the Coaching Staff are Fired

Some 15 members of the squad are unhappy about recent criticism aimed in their direction after Laureano Gonzalez, head of the federation, accused the squad of conspiring to work together in a bid to have head coach Noel Sanvicente fired.

‘A movement came together there [inside the team] to throw out the coach, who is our best national coach,’ Gonzalez said.
The group of international players, including West Brom striker Salomon Rondon, strongly denied they had been plotting to have manager Sanvicente sacked by, er, refusing to play for the team ever again until he is sacked:

Those ‘declarations are totally false and defamatory of our honor and reputation,’ read a statement from the following players: Tomas Rincon, Oswaldo Vizcarrondo, Salomon Rondon, Roberto Rosales, Cesar Gonzalez, Luis Manuel Seijas, Franklin Lucena, Grenddy Perozo, Josef Martinez, Juan Falcon, Nicolas Fedor, Gabriel Cichero, Ronald Vargas, Alejandro Guerra and Christian Santos.

Apparently the players have decided that they are no longer willing to take part in a ‘environment already damaged by our directors’, according to a statement shared by all the players on social media.

‘As long as the Venezuelan Football Federation is commanded by the current directors … [the] dream of going to a soccer World Cup is threatened,’ the players wrote.

The strike action comes just days after defender Fernando Amorebieta announced his plans to retire from the national side with complaints aimed towards the coaches and directors.
