Driver’s Licence, Prerequisite For Okada Riders In FCT – FRSC

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Wednesday advised commercial motorcyclists, popularly called `Okada riders’, to obtain their driver licence to operate in the ‘permissible’ parts of the territory.

The FCT Sector Commander, FRSC, Mrs Susan Ajenge, gave the call in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to her, any motorcyclist found on FCT roads without a driver’s licence would be punished in accordance with the laws.

NAN recalls that commercial motorcyclists have been banned in Abuja city centre and the highways, thereby restricting their operations to the suburbs or satellite towns.

“Like other vehicle drivers, motorcylists are also licensed by the authority in order to ensure that only competent persons drive them.

“Most of the Okada-related accidents on the roads are caused by incompetent riders who throw caution to the wind because they don’t know the art of riding.

“Unqualified and unruly motorcyclists are usually apprehended by our patrol team as part of the measures to stem Okada-related accidents,” Ajenge said.

However, she said that FRSC had been working with other agencies in enforcing the Okada ban on highways in the territory, saying partnership has yielded positive result.

“There is total ban of Okada on the highways and we are working with the police and Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) to enforce the ban.

“Some Okada operators still disobey the order and we have been impounding their vehicles whenever we catch them.

“But you still see some of them along Nyanya, Katampe and Lugbe highways and we will continue to apprehend them in order to save lives.

“Over 3,000 Okada have been seized to serve as deterrent to other riders.

“Since Okada has been banned in the city centre, there is serious reduction in the number of patients at accident wards in Abuja hospital,” she said. (NAN)
