Kaduna State Governor Yero Faces Impeachment Over N2.7bn SURE-P Fund

Fourteen members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly have declared their intention to initiate the process of impeaching the State Governor, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, should he dare spend the 2.774bn local government SURE-P Funds. The House led by the deputy minority leader, Dr. Aminu Abdullahi Shagali, accused the governor of last “minute looting and squandering of public funds.” They alleged that the incumbent governor is attempting to quickly disburse the 2014 SURE-P funds of the 23 Local government of the State. Governor Yero of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost his re-election bid to the Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai of the All Progressive Congress in the April governorship elections.

The members who addressed the Journalists after a closed door meeting held at the Kaduna state House of Assembly, directed the governor to stop any attempt to spend the N2.744bn belonging to the 23 local government areas of the State.

According to them “if by Tuesday he refuses to listen to us, we will be left with no option than to commence impeachment proceedings against him”.

According to them, the outgoing government is in a rush to appropriate and disburse the SURE-P funds of the 23 local governments that was unused. “A request submitted this week by the executive arm to this Honourable House to appropriate the 2014 Sure-P Funds of the 23 local governments to the tune of 2.744bn, is not only improper, but a gross financial recklessness.

“There is no how a local government council can judiciously execute any meaningful project within two weeks, considering the fact that diligent due process and financial procedures has to be followed “.

They alleged that the ceding of 50% of the said fund to be used for road project by the Governor is in total violation of the laid down regulations regarding the SURE-P funds.

“Even though an attempt was made to discuss the issue and pass it by the Assembly, a resolution was made during an executive session that the funds should not be appropriated and disbursed. We hereby state categorically that we are not a party to such financial recklessness and dissociate ourselves with the move “, they said.

The Spokesman to the Governor, Ahmed Maiyaki, could not be reached as at the time of filing this report. (Leadership)
