PDP Makes U-turn, Passes Vote Of Confidence On Jega

PDP national chairman, Dr Adamu Mu’azu, who disclosed his party’s new stance yesterday during a press conference in Abuja, noted that although the election was postponed because of INEC’s unreadiness, the party was confident that Jega would deliver free, fair and credible elections.

Mua’zu also reacted to the claims that former President Olusegun Obasanjo has endorsed the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the election, saying Obasanjo cannot bring down the PDP which he helped to build.

Similarly, PDP denied reports that their governors, particularly in the North East and North West regions, were working with the opposition ahead of the polls.

Mu’azu said, “I want you to know that President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Prof Jega and his team to INEC’s leadership. I am sure the president thought very well before he appointed them.

“Secondly, you have asked me about my confidence in Jega; my answer is not far-fetched. At the press briefing, as a candidate Jonathan stated his confidence in Jega, and he is the candidate of my party.

“We have confidence in Jega; that his team will conduct a very free, fair, transparent and credible election in the country.”

Speaking on the support of Obasanjo for Buhari ahead of the election, Mu’azu said: “I consider that a rumour. I know he is more sagacious and experienced than that, and I have no doubt in my mind that he still remains not just our party member but one of our revered party leaders in PDP.

“And if you recall his last letter to the president, he was totally against anti-party (activities). I have no doubt that he would want to practise anti-party (activities) himself, unless I see and confirm beyond reasonable doubt that he said it. I am not holding brief for him but I know he will not engage in anti-party (activities).

“Because from my record he is still in my party and I am sure he will not associated himself with the destruction of the very house he has built.”

He also waved off the concern of the International community over the postponement of the elections, adding that the shift of the elections was backed by the constitution, as they will still hold within the time frame accepted by law.

“There is no apprehension because we are still operating within the law. We don’t expect anybody to bring the law of his land and practise in Nigeria,” Mu’azu said. (Leadership)
