The United Nations (UN) yesterday backed the six weeks postponement of the 2015 general polls, saying it now understood clearly why the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) decided to shift the polls.
Representative of the UN secretary general for Nigeria and West Africa, Mr Ibn Chambers who disclosed this when he conveyed a message from Mr Ban Ki Moon to President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja said the UN is also strongly behind Nigeria in the war against Boko Haram.
Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting with the president, Chambers who is a former ECOWAS chairman said the UN commended the electoral body and the Nigerian government for ensuring that all eligible Nigerian voters get their permanent voter cards (PVCs).
He said, “The extension provides an opportunity for many more Nigerians to collect these cards and be able to exercise their franchise.”
He stated that the UN appreciated “the pure manner in which the electoral process is proceeding”, and called for restraint and transparency in the electioneering process. (Leadership)
