Senior Opposition Leader Arrested Over Violence In Bangladesh

Police in Bangladesh arrested a senior opposition leader on Tuesday after at least four people were killed during a political rally.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was apprehended as he came out of the National Press Club in central Dhaka where he had stayed on Monday night.

"I stayed at the press club for my personal security," Alamgir told reporters before leaving the club.

Police officer Shibly Noman said Alamgir was arrested on charges related to violence in Dhaka during a rally to mark one year since disputed general elections.

Alamgir attended an anti-government discussion at the press club on Monday.

Police banned rallies and demonstration in Dhaka after the BNP and its allies called a demonstration to denounce the elections on January 5, 2014.

The opposition also called for a blockade of roads, railways and waterways across Bangladesh.

Opposition supporters clashed with security personnel and ruling Awami League party activists on Monday, leaving at least four people dead.
