Constitutional Amendment: Ex-NANS President Urges State Lawmakers To Approve LG Autonomy

Former President of National Association of Nigerian Students, Comrade Dauda Mohammed has called on the various State Houses of Assembly to endorse the proposal by the National Assembly to grant autonomy to Local Government administration in Nigeria.

Mohammed, who is the National Coordinator of the Project Nigeria, a Non Governmental Organisation also called on the well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the State Houses of Assembly to approve the proposal LG autonomy in order to give Nigeria true sense of Federalism.

Mohammed in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, said he was not unaware that some State Assemblies have already voted in moves which opposes the National Assembly Constitutional amendment proposal.

He, however, said such decisions could be reversed if Nigerians in their various states rise to demand a concurrence to the National Assembly proposal on LG autonomy by the State assemblies.

He said there was no doubt that Local government autonomy would bring about rapid transformation at the grassroots, unlike the present situation of stunted growth and inaction.

He added that effective development at the grassroots would reduce tremendously rural urban drift and congestion in the city centres.

Mohammed, further noted there is high rate of crime waves and heighten joblessness in urban centres because of this congestion caused by lack of development at the rural level.

He said able bodied youth could only be encouraged to key into the Federal Government’s youth in agriculture programme and ensure its success if life at the base is made better.

He added LG autonomy would also bring about food security as well as generate more activities at the grassroots.
